"Meet the Birds at Muncaster Castle

Today Ravenglass offers visitors an ideal     centre from which to explore this part of the Lake District.   There is plenty to enjoy in the      immediate village and surrounding area as well as further afield.

Muncaster Castle is open to the public  and its        extensive grounds   are famous for    azaleas and               rhododendrons.   Situated within the grounds is the  World Owl  Centre head       quarters of the World Owl trust.   A wide   variety of Owls and other birds are on     display,  a collection of which can be seen in flight on the Castle lawns.   You can also visit the Meadow Vole Maze where you can              experience the   secret  life of  Max Meadow Vole .    Muncaster Castle has been the home of the Pennington family for 800 years and is a delight.    Still the  family  home but much more than that a window into a great past.   Those who stay here say it is haunted by ghosts,        including the legendary Tom Fool.

Steam enthusiasts of all ages will enjoy a trip on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Narrow Gauge Railway, known locally with    affection as  the "Ratty".   The "Ratty"      travels through some of the most beautiful  scenery the Lakes has to        offer, with plenty of stops along the way to give the opportunity to  further        explore on foot.

Within 15 minutes by car, from Ravenglass there is the highest peak and the  deepest  lake in England, Scafell Pike  and   Wastewater.    The views  as you travel over Hardknott &     Wrenos Pass on the way to Ambleside  are truly breath taking and not for the faint hearted.

Ravenglass  is the start or finish of several walks including the Lakeland to Lindisfarne, Ravenglass to Scarborough, Cumberland Way and Furness Way.   The village is served by Northwest Trains on the     Barrow to     Carlisle line.
